Medimate

Supporting users in their health journey.
Timeline: 1 month
Year: 2024
Role: UX / UI Designer

Overview

Medimate is a comprehensive and user-friendly healthcare application designed to empower individuals in managing their overall well-being. Users can log their vital signs such as blood pressure, heart rate, and temperature, allowing them to track their health trends over time. Moreover, Medimate incorporates a reminder system, ensuring that users never miss important medication schedules, doctor's appointments, or health-related tasks.

The Goal
Medimate encourages individuals to make informed decisions and actively participate in their health management, enabling them to take control of their health journey. Medimate is the ultimate companion for individuals who value their health and well-being.

Context
I chose health management because I am passionate about delivering accessible healthcare through human-centred design solutions. I leveraged this project with my existing experience and knowledge in the healthcare field, making it impactful and relevant.

Design

Log

Users are able to log in their vital signs (blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen saturation, blood sugars, weight) from the home screen. Throughout the journey users can see a summary of previous responses to aid their memory of what the previous input was.

Care

In this section, users can integrate and share their data with their healthcare team to be able to see the same information. If the user opts out of this, the information displayed here will be personally inputted data.
Additionally, users can also schedule an appointment if they are digitally connected with their healthcare team.

Reminders

Integrated reminders aid users in medication compliance and remembering when to take their medication. The reminders will also reference your health library and recommend suggestions on what the user may want to log.

Part 1

The Challenge

Individuals admitted and/or diagnosed with chronic health issues face challenges in effectively managing and monitoring their health information. This leads to poor patient outcomes due to confusion from complex health information due to difficulties in understanding and managing health effectively and proactively.

The Users

User Objectives

  1. Health Management
Individuals require a holistic view of their health information to effectively manage and monitor their health
  2. Health Literacy and Patient Teaching
Individuals need patient teaching on when they should seek medical assistance if their vital signs are out of normal range.
  3. Accessibility
Access to their healthcare records in one central area
  4. Communication
Improved communication methods for the healthcare provider and patient to share existing and previous health visits
  5. Patient Centred Care
Having the patient involved and a part of the decision-making process.
  6. Technology
The promotion of interoperability to facilitate the exchange of information among different healthcare providers

User Personas

Insights

Common themes and patterns among the interviews.

Health Literacy

Participants with chronic health issues express confusion during patient teaching and demonstrate a lack of understanding regarding their own health and prescribed medication or when to seek medical help.

Health Management

Participants reported that they would not write down health appointments or track them in one area but rather multiple.

Accessibility

Test results, medical records, and treatment plans are not available for the patient to access or reference.

Existing Competition

Upon research I found that there were many health related apps and that they were referred to as telehealth or telemedicine apps. The increase in these apps being made was in response to the pandemic to improve accessibility for those who needed to quarantine. The shift towards accessibility in health care has greatly assisted individuals who previously faced physical or other barriers in accessing healthcare services. This change has resulted in improved health outcomes for a larger population, as more people are now able to receive the necessary medical attention and treatments they require.

For my competitive analysis, I grouped them into Telemedicine and Health Management.

TeleHealth

The telemedicine apps provided remote consultations, treatment planning, and clinical care but required payment.
Telus Health
Pros:
  • Health care provided services
Cons:
  • Has a bug, does not let the user progress forward
Maple
Pros:
  • Comprehensive health profile and history
Cons:
  • Paid service of $79.99/month
PC Health
Pros:
  • Holistic health profile
  • Incentivized health programs
  • Programs, health care providers, and pharmacy available
Cons:
  • Can be overwhelming with so much information

Health Management

In comparison the Health Management apps was a good landscape to identify strengths and weaknesses.
Apple Health
Pros:
  • Integrated with apple devices and other health apps
Cons:
  • Confusing layout
  • Requires the user to navigate through the app - not intuitive or straightforward
One Drop
Pros:
  • Add feature allows users to record or add reminders with the same button
Cons:
  • No travel planning features other than for stays
Medisafe
Pros:
  • In-depth medication record
Cons:
  • No travel planning freatures other than for stays

Part 2

Problem definition & ideation

Problem statement

Individuals admitted and/or diagnosed with chronic health issues face challenges in effectively managing and monitoring their health information. This leads to poor patient outcomes due to confusion from complex health information which lead to difficulties in understanding and managing health effectively and proactively.

Research Question

How do individuals admitted and/or diagnosed with chronic health issues experience challenges in managing and monitoring their health information, and what is the impact of this difficulty on patient outcomes, particularly in terms of understanding and effectively managing health proactively?

Takeaways

This project was a personal project that I began in 2021 as a portfolio piece for my application into Design school. Prior to fundamental design education, I solely focused on the UX/UI component without taking into consideration the significance of research and usability testing.

Jumping to present day, I decided to start the design process anew to better reflect my current knowledge and skills. The usability testing that I conducted refined my final design elements to be legible and distinct. Due to limitations and time restraints, medication data integration and telemedicine services are not offered but will be considered under development as the project progresses in the future.
